The lived experience of women with imprisoned spouses

Abstract

One of the most challenging groups of female household heads are the wives of prisoners. The purpose of this study is to explain the lived experience of their husbands being imprisoned. The method is qualitative researches. The research reached saturation with 7 women whose husbands were imprisoned in Tehran according to the entry and exit criteria. The findings was used to collect reached saturation with this number. In-depth interview technique data and thematic analysis method was used to analyze data from phenomenological interviews. The interviews were recorded and analyzed using the thematic analysis method. In this study, 9 main themes were extracted, including psychological trauma, social trauma, economic status, parenting, attitude, feeling of loneliness, feeling of helplessness, expectation and coping strategies. Also 32 subthemes and 110 semantic units were extracted. As a result, strengthening coping strategies and empowering women with female partners can reduce the severity of the challenges of this group
