Abstract

Electronic monitoring through using Global Positioning System (GPS) controls criminals from a distance. It also provides the possibility of their orderly and limited presence in society while they are serving their punishment. Relying upon a descriptive-analytical method, the aim of this article is to analyze the effects of electronic monitoring on parents on children’s personality development and the continuity of the criminals’ family lives. According to the findings of this study, electronic monitoring can serve as a family-oriented judicial decision. It is a more evolved form of implementation of the principle of personalization of the criminal responses and confines side effects of the punishment to the offender. Because electronic monitoring is associated with considering the personality, capacity, responsibility and role of the offender in the family, it can provide background for performance of their normal functions in the family and respecting the rights of other family members. Ideally. It can result in family self-sufficiency, healthy personality development of children and continuity of family life. In cases when the offender under electronic monitoring is far removed from his family, it can protect the family from probable unsuitable behaviors of the offender and provide background for suitable interaction between them and family member in the future.
