This study was aimed to investigate the relationship between family communication patterns and students’ adjustment to university with the mediating role of coping strategies. Research design was correlational and the statistical population was all undergraduate students at Islamic Azad University, Behbahan Branch. To conduct this study, 523 students who were selected by random multi-stage cluster sampling method, completed the revised Family Communication Pattern, the Multidimensional Coping Inventory, and the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire. The findings showed that the family conversation orientation could directly and significantly predict adaptation to university. The relationship between problem-oriented coping and adjustment to university was positive and statistically significant; while the relationship between emotion-oriented copying and adjustment to university was negative and statistically significant. Also, the relationship between family communication patterns and coping strategies was significant. In addition, family communication patterns could indirectly predict the adjustment to university through coping strategies as a mediator. All in all, it can be concluded that the family conversation orientation through problem-oriented coping strategy can positively affect students’ adjustment to university, and the family conformity orientation through emotion-orientated coping strategy can negatively influence it.
