Elaborating Experts' Perspectives on the Current and Desired State of Pre-Marital Counseling in Iran

Abstract

Effective pre-marital counseling plays an essential role in empowering couples for a successful marriage. Therefore, the present study has been carried out with the aim of Elaborating Experts' Perspectives on the Current and Desired State of Pre-Marital Counseling in Iran. This study is qualitative, basic qualitative research, and its statistical population included premarital professionals in 2023. The purposive sampling technique was used and qualified people were identified and a request for participation was sent to them. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews until reaching saturation, and were analyzed based on the thematic analysis method of Braun& Clark. In this way, 12 premarital experts were interviewed. According to the results of data analysis, from the point of view of experts, premarital counseling standards are considered as the current procedures of premarital counseling and moving forward from current situation to the desired situation. According to the results of this study, the lack of a specific structure in premarital counseling has caused confusion for experts and their over-reliance on their personal experiences and tastes. Trying to develop a suitable structure for Iranian culture in premarital counseling is important due to the consequences of this incident.
