Population is considered one of the most important components of authority in various economic, security, political and cultural fields in the world. Regardless of the structural factors and contexts that have played an important role in the process of demographic changes and fertility decline in the past two decades, the role of couples in having children should not be neglected. It seems that the decision to have children, which is a personal agreement between couples, has been disrupted at the micro and interpersonal levels of individuals today. Accordingly, the aim of the present study is to explore and identify the mental knots of couples about having children and increasing the population. The research method in the present study is qualitative and phenomenological, and the data collection technique was in-depth interviews with couples without children or only children. The research findings indicate the existence of ambiguities and mental knots of many couples about having children and increasing the population, which have been categorized into 5 axes. Mental knots regarding livelihood, mental knots regarding upbringing, mental knots regarding health, mental knots regarding identity, and mental knots regarding politics.
