The purpose of this research was to determine the predictive role of dark traits of personality and couples' communication patterns in marital instability in married individuals. The method of the present study is correlational. For this purpose, 246 were selected by convenience sampling method filled in Marital Instability Index (MII), short-form dark triad (SD3) and communication pattern questionnaire (CPQ). The data was analyzed using stepwise multiple regression method. The results showed that in the relationship of marital instability and dark traits of personality, the instability of marriage has a negative and significant relationship with narcissism, respectively, and has a positive and significant relationship with psychopathy. There is also no significant relationship between marital instability and Machiavellianism. Respectively, the variable of marital instability with other variables, includes the demand/withdraw male, demand/withdraw woman, and avoid mutual Patterns has a positive and significant relationship. Also, three variables of demand/withdraw woman, mutual constructive and avoid mutual Patterns as predictors of marital instability in total account for 49 percent of variance in marital instability. The results showed that marriage instability can be predicted based on couples' communication patterns and dark traits of narcissistic and anti-social characters.
